The mechanism of evolution a baldness

The androgenic alopecia is a dropout of a hair, on one of the following reasons:

1. The redundant presence of a man's sexual hormone of dihydrotestosterone (DHT);
2. Hypersensitivity of hair follicles to DHT;
3. Hyperactivity of ferment a 5-alpha-reductases which transmutes testosterone in DHT.

Picture 1. Man's type of a baldness.

On some estimates, the androgenic alopecia makes up to 95 % of all cases of a baldness at men and women. At men the androgenic alopecia will usually start in front from a line of propagation of a hair and advances to a vertex (though other alternatives are possible also) (Picture 1).

Picture 2. Female type of a baldness.

At women progressing thinning out and a thinning of a hair practically on all head, especially in the field of a vertex is observed (Picture 2).

Still Hippokrates has paid attention, that eunuchs do not grow bald. Later same condition scored Aristotle. In 40th years of XX century doctor James Gamilton wrote, that the reason of a baldness can be excess of man's sexual hormones in a combination to genetical predisposition.

As a matter of fact, it is impossible to tell, that sexual hormones kill or reinforce propagation of a hair in general. The result of activity of androgens or estrogens on a hair will be defined by presence of a special receptor on a surface of crates of a hair follicle. The receptor reminds the button, and a hormone - a dactyl which pushes this button. The result of pressure of the button is predetermined by mechanisms which are present at a follicle.

All question in what wires to these buttons are brought. So, estrogens boost propagation of a hair on a head and kill propagation of a hair on the face and a body. Androgens boost propagation of a beard and whiskers, propagation of a hair on some sections of a body and can kill propagation of a hair on a head. Certainly, has put here not so much in androgens, how much in what follicles in what areas are had. If on a head there will be follicles which have DHT-dependent "buttons" of a stopping of propagation in reply to excess of androgens there will be a dropout of a hair. If we shall transplant on a head follicles from area of whiskers or beards excess of androgens, on the contrary, will call propagation of a hair on a head. By the way, one of methods of controlling with a baldness at an androgenic alopecia is transplantation of DHT-activated follicles on sections of a baldness.

The women, suffering an androgenic alopecia, usually have also other attributes of a hyperandrogenic syndrome - redundant propagation of a hair on the face, and also acne and seborrhea. However virilization, that is occurrence of man's features of a constitution of a body, is observed seldom. Almost always both men, and the women, suffering an androgenic alopecia, have the normal or inappreciablly increased level of androgens in a blood. It is considered, that a principal cause of dropout of a hair at an androgenic alopecia is or pinch of activity the 5-alpha-reductases, or sensitization of receptors to DHT.

Ferment a 5-alpha-reductases is present at an organism in two views: the type 1 contains in a prostate gland at men, type 2 - in sebaceous glands and hair follicles. The problem of ferment - to transfer the testosterone circulating in a blood, in the active shape - dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It would Seem, what for to hair bulbuses to transmute testosterone in DHT if a hair from it fall out? However there is the deep biological sense. A hair are the important sexual attribute, and they need to know, whether they should grow in the yielded section of a body. And it depends on that to that posesses the yielded body - to the man or the woman. For example, the follicles had in the field of a chin, will react on DHT plusly, as a beard - a man's attribute. And here excess of estrogens will force the same follicles to stop production of a hair. As the long hair are an attribute of women, instead of men the hair follicles had on a head, are boosted by estrogens and kill with androgens. If any follicle becomes too sensitive to androgens it killing activity can become for it excessive.

DHT manifests the killing activity, affecting on a growth phase of a hair so the hair prematurely enters into a resting phase. In general, each follicle can be in three various phases of life cycle - anagen, catagen and the telogen (Picture 3.) Anagen is a time when a hair follicle yields a hair. In a stage anagen which lasts some years, usually there are 85 % of hair follicles. Catagen - a time of degradation of a follicle. Propagation of a hair is shut down, and the root of a hair gets the characteristic shape of a bulbus. This phase prolongs some weeks. In phase telogen to a phase of a hair separates from a root and sluggishly advances to a surface of a leather. In a stage of a telogen there are approximately 15 % of a hair. This hair fall out at combing and washing of a head. Normal losses of a hair makes 70-80 in day.

Picture 3. Growth phases of a hair.

In a picture you see, that from a concluding phase of propagation (Anagen) the hair transfers in following stage Catagen. Thus the interior segment separates from a papilla. Further the bulbus of a hair is tightened up to a level of a muscle-эректора (Telogen). Then propagation of a hair is shut down, begins formation of a new hair and, in phase Anagen which has stepped again, the growing hair "pushes out" a bulbus of an aged hair.

DHT in some follicles is the reason of cutting of a growth phase. These follicles do not attain the maximal quantity and consequently start to yield a thin and feeble hair. At a microscopic study the reduced, obsolete follicles which are the characteristic attribute of an androgenic alopecia are visible. As the relation between follicles in a stage anagen and in a stage of a telogen is displaced aside based follicles, on a head there are many follicles which simultaneously kick a hair fibril. As a result the thinning and impairment of a hair are terminated by their progressing dropout. In hair bulbuses other ferment - an aromatase which transmutes DHT revertively into testosterone and estrogens contains. He reduces level DHT in hair follicles and is the antagonist the 5-alpha-reductases. At women in follicles of the frontal area of a scalp the content of an aromatase in some times is more, than at men. It diffuse and less expressed character of an androgenic alopecia at women speaks. Besides at women in the field of a nucha DHT-steady follicles which do not shorten a growth phase at action DHT place. Therefore thinning out of a hair at women usually does not affect bottom of a nucha. At men also the bottom of a nucha is the most inconvertible to a baldness. From this area take follicles for transplantations.

Prescription Propecia - 7 Precautions You Need To Know

By Mike Jones

Prescription Propecia became available in 1998 after Merck & Co., the company that manufactures this drug obtained FDA approval. Since then with the opening up of numerous pharmacies online it seems easier than ever to obtain this drug.

However, be aware of the following precautions before you order prescription Propecia:

1. Propecia is for men only, and 1 tablet has to be taken orally each day. Be prepared to take it for many years as the hair you gain through the use of this drug can be lost once the medication is discontinued. Hence, calculate the expense and determine whether you are prepared for this financial outlay.

2. Although over 80% of the men in clinical trials experienced positive results in keeping their hair and seeing new growth, a small number, around 3%, experienced some form of sexual dysfunction. These side effects disappeared shortly after the drug was discontinued.

3. Prescription Propecia is specifically to help hair growth in the mid-scalp and crown area. There is no evidence to prove it is effective with a receding hairline or for hair loss on the temples.

4. The long term effects of taking prescription Propecia are unknown. If a man starts taking this drug in his twenties and has to continue to avoid hair loss, by the time he is in his fifties he will have been on the drug for 30 years. As Propecia has only been on the market since 1998 it is not possible to determine what effects this could have in the long term.

5. A personal consultation with your medical practitioner is recommended before taking any drug. Ordering from an online pharmacy may or may not be safe. A questionnaire has to be filled out before the online pharmacy can fill the order. Be sure you research the web site and look for symbols or links indicating the pharmacy is licensed and registered with a government agency.

6. Check that the web site you wish to order from has medical professionals acting as consultants and be prepared to ask questions directly to these professionals and evaluate the response, both for speed and professionalism.

7. Remember that individuals react differently to drugs and medications. Prescription Propecia may work well for some men and not for others. Be prepared to wait patiently for at least 2-3 months before drawing a conclusion at to whether Propecia is working for you or not. If you do not see a difference in your hair density after this time then consider stopping the medication.

While FDA approval certainly gives Prescription Propecia legitimacy, some search for alternatives in view of the unknown long term side effects and cost of continued usage.

NewHair Biofactors is one such alternative. It is a natural herbal solutions, non-prescription, and much cheaper than prescription Propecia.

Although not FDA approved, it has been on the market since 1993 and it it has helped thousands of men and women stop hair loss and increase the density of their hair growth, while maintaining a healthy scalp.

Clinical studies reported in the Medical Post of 1993 reported an 85.7% success rate in the 148 participants in the study. Check the resource box for details.

Prescription Propecia may just be the answer you are looking for to combat hair loss. On the other hand, if the precautions listed above make you cautious, it is encouraging to note there is an alternative which also has a high success rate.

Finasteride Propecia Hair Loss Drug - Answers To Frequently Asked Questions

By Mike Jones

Finasteride Propecia is one of only two prescription drugs approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) to combat hair loss. Originally Finasteride was used for prostate enlargement in men over 50.

Then in January 1998 the FDA approved Finasteride Propecia 1 mg per day for the treatment of hair loss in men. As with any prescription drug, there can be limitations and side effects.

Browse this FAQ page to get a basic understanding of how Finasteride Propecia works for hair loss and decide whether you will consult your doctor about the possibility of getting a prescription.

Just exactly what is Finasteride Propecia?

Finasteride for hair loss is a non-addictive oral medication manufactured by Merck & Co. Inc. under the name Propecia. Each film coated tablet contains 1 mg of Finasteride and it may be taken with or without food. Just swallow it with a glass of water.

Who is Finasteride Propecia intended for?

Men only! Women and children should not take this drug.

Additionally, pregnant women or women who might be pregnant should not handle broken or crushed tablets of Finasteride Propecia to avoid the risk of causing abnormalities in a male baby's sex organs.

Men who are experiencing hair loss on the crown of the head or in the mid-scalp area may benefit from Finasteride Propecia. At present there is no evidence to prove it is effective for a receeding hairline or for hair loss on the sides of the head around the temples.

How soon can I expect to see results?

Taking 1 tablet per day (it makes no difference if the dose is increased) results are often seen within 3 to 6 months, namely, a slowing down or stopping of hair loss, and an increased hair density.

Do I have to keep taking Finasteride Propecia?

If you want to maintain the benefit of using this drug then continued use is recommended. It is possible you can lose the hair you gain 9 to 12 months after you stop taking the drug.

What results can I expect?

Results obviously vary from person to person. Many men note a slowing down of hair loss after taking Finasteride Propecia and an increase in the number of visible scalp hairs, although it seems you will not be able to grow back all hair you have lost by taking this drug.

Clinical studies showed that after two years approximately 8 out of 10 men either kept their hair or grew more. 17% of the 1,553 men involved in the test continued to lose hair.

How does Finasteride Propecia work?

The medication causes a significant drop in DHT levels in both the scalp and the blood. DHT (dihydrotestosterone) is one of the main culprits in causing hair loss. Finasteride Propecia blocks the conversion of the male hormone testosterone into DHT.

What are the side effects of Finasteride Propecia?

About 3.8% of the men involved in clinical trials experienced some form of sexual dysfunction. As the percentage indicates, the likelihood is uncommon and the side effects disappeared within a few weeks once the medication was stopped.

The side effects become apparent before the user notices any improvement in hair growth. This is important to note as there is no risk of losing any hair gained through stopping the medication.

From the information presented above it can be seen that the decision to use Finasteride Propecia to combat hair loss must be thought out carefully.

On the negative side, there is a small risk of sexual dysfunction and the medication has to be taken indefinitely to maintain any improvement in hair growth.

On the positive side, there is a high chance this medication will make a difference to hair loss and the chances of re-growth.

Consult with your doctor and see whether he feels you would be a good candidate for Finasteride Propecia!

Ordering Propecia Online Is A Pain-Free Experience

By Michael Connelly

When it comes to buying hair growth products the internet is the best way to make your purchases with the least amount of embarrassment. It is a great way to avoid awkward moments at the local pharmacy store and a very wise way to save money as well. You can avoid that excruciating moment at the check stand when the boisterous clerk decides to ask for a price check on “PROPECIA, the Hair Growth Product?!” The fact of the matter is anyone who buys products for their thinning hair knows exactly what I am talking about, and for anyone else, consider yourself lucky.

The acceptance is always the most painful part; you finally come to the realization that you cannot stop the loss of your hair without some help from hair growth products. You visit your local brick and mortar pharmacy store to buy Propecia. You just want to get in, get your product and get out without so much as a word to anyone other than the necessary ones said to the pharmacist regarding your order. Unfortunately, this never happens. Life never works that way.

You end up seeing someone you know as the pharmacist is helping you at the counter. This person just happens to be standing right behind you in line. It could be an old buddy, an old girlfriend or just someone you went to school with a long time ago. The pharmacist calls out your name to an assistant in the back as they search for your order. This prompts the person behind you to tap you on the shoulder to see if it you really are the person they think you are.

They are happy to see you at first, but they quickly notice that you are acting a little stand-offish and gradually their face changes to a look of curiosity. They glance down at the counter as the pharmacist throws your order down proclaiming “Okay that’s 180 1milligram Propecia tabs. That will be $527.32.” You are horrified in two different ways at the same time. The insensitivity of the clerk and the price of your order have suddenly sent your blood pressure level through the roof! You turn towards the clerk, and then back towards the person you know from the past. As you are fumbling for words to say to this person they glance up at your hair line. Their face turns to a pitiful look of sorrow as they turn back and make eye contact with you. They realize that you have come to that store to pick up your hair growth medicine. This person always has a full head of hair.

Alopecia (baldness) is a cruel disease. It is only relatively recently that science and medicine have come up with any kind of treatments. In the old days when a person was afflicted with this condition they just had to suffer. Your only option was to wear a wig or a hat, and both of those methods only covered the problem.

Nowadays there are several ways to treat the symptoms of hair loss and most of them have been proven to actually work rather well. Propecia is one of the best products available. It is a drug that blocks the hormone that is responsible for hair loss. A significant number of men using this product have shown an increase in hair growth. It is an FDA approved drug that has been around for years now and has withstood the test of time.

Buying Propecia online is like mowing your lawn with a tractor/mower. It is the act of performing a chore minus the hard work and loss of dignity. The internet takes away the risk of experiencing an embarrassing situation at your local brick and mortar pharmacy store. You get to carry out this task in the comfort of your own home. Your order arrives at your door the next day in a plain package by way of FEDEX delivery, and not even the delivery person is wise to the fact that you are taking products to help you grow more hair. The prices are also much better when you order online than if you buy at a local pharmacy store. There is very little overhead with an online pharmacy. Because they have no employee salaries or building leases to pay for they are able to pass the savings on to their customers.

Is There A Hair Loss Gene?

by Renee Hans

Is Going Bald Inherited? Men who start to go bald even before a mid-life crisis may have their mothers to blame, according to a new study. Researchers have found that the main construction manual for a full head of hair is located on the X chromosome, which sons always inherit from their mothers. (see Hair Loss Fact)

This genetic storage space contains the so-called androgen receptor gene, a long time balding suspect. Looking at men who were losing their hair at a relatively young age, a team led by Markus Nothen, PhD, of the Life & Brain Center at Bonn University, Germany systematically examined all of the genetic patterns within the X chromosome to see why certain hairlines recede faster than others.

While many doctors will check hemoglobin levels to test for anemia, not all will go to the next step of checking for iron deficiency without anemia. To check for this, Trost recommends that patients who may be iron deficient be screened for ferritin, a direct measure of the amount of iron in the body. These hair loss patients include pre-menopausal women, women who just gave birth and patients who recently had surgery, all of whom may have low iron levels as a result of blood loss. Additionally, vegetarians and recent crash dieters should also be tested as they may not eat enough iron in their diet.

Iron Levels for Hair Growth If iron levels are low, Trost recommends that patients be taught which foods contain high levels of iron, like red meats, spinach and raisins. Iron supplements are also helpful, however, patients who take these pills need to be monitored closely by a doctor. Too much iron can be very dangerous, affecting the heart and pancreas, among other organs.

In many cases, the additional iron helps the body re-grow the hair. "For some people, it makes a profound difference," said Trost, who gives the example of a pre-menopausal woman who is losing her hair mostly because of iron deficiency.

Important Information About PROPECIA The effectiveness of PROPECIA was demonstrated in studies of men, aged 18 to 41, with mild to moderate hair loss at the top and middle front of the head. There is not sufficient evidence that PROPECIA works for receding hairlines at the temples.

PROPECIA is for the treatment of male pattern hair loss in MEN ONLY and should NOT be used by women or children.

In clinical studies for PROPECIA, a small number of men experienced certain sexual side effects, such as less desire for sex, difficulty in achieving an erection, or a decrease in the amount of semen. Each of these side effects occurred in less than 2% of men and went away in men who stopped taking PROPECIA because of them.

Hair Loss Talk And More

By Jim Hampton

What you are about to read... is general information about hair loss talk as it’s debated throughout a lot of people and forums. I will attempt to identify options that you may have in having a remedy for hair loss.

Understanding why hair loss develops, what the symptoms are, what are some of the common causes are and what treatments are available for people afflicted with this problem.

What exactly is hair loss?

Whether you have partial or complete loss of hair the medical definition of hair loss is called alopecia. To me hair loss is hair loss whatever you want to call it but when you are talking with your doctor this is the proper name for it and if you want to do any investigation into the matter you'll have to call it alopecia.

Development of hair loss.

You don't wake up one morning and find all your hair gone to experience the typical affliction of hair loss. It usually happens gradually to a point where you want to do something about it. For men it’s commonly called male pattern baldness and for women it’s called female pattern baldness. Not too much to figure out on that but the result is the same for both. Hair loss is a lot more common as we age just because the hairs on our hair stop growing as profusely as it did when we were young. Call it life, call it genetics, call it anything you want but these factors we cannot overcome.

Common causes of hair loss.

As previously stated, the common causes of hair loss may be attributed to our age but it also can be attributed to the way we condition our hair. We really have to take a look at ourselves and how we treat our hair to see if there are any indications in that arena. For example, how often do you shampoo your hair? is it excessive? I mean if you shampoo your hair 2 or 3 times a day and you use strong shampoo ingredients then maybe you should at least cut back on that aspect and see if there is an improvement in your hair loss. If you're a woman, have you been taking birth control pills? Sounds unrelated but in some cases it is related and it could be one of the link causes to hair loss. Of course if you're on any type of medication, then you could ask your doctor for side effects on taking the medication. Basically anything that you put in your body is suspect to after effects. Really take a look at yourself and see if this applies to you or not.

I've briefly discussed some aspects of hair loss as it relates to people afflicted with this reaction. I'm hoping that this article at least makes you think about the possibilities of the reasons why hair loss is affecting you and that you can research further into finding a cure for your own situation. You may want to take a look at Jim's website and see if that offers any more of insight into finding out the underlying reason for your hair loss and maybe even trying some organic remedies.

Never give up hope that you can do something about your situation. You can just easily go to Jim's website to find out more information about hair loss information and get on a newsletter that will give you enlightening information on the subject.

The Particulars Of Propecia

By Michael Connelly

With all the talk these days about Propecia I figured that this little pill needed a closer look. It is the only FDA approved drug for the treatment of male pattern baldness and it is being touted by many as the only thing that actually does something to stop the nightmare of a receding hairline. Many men have been quick to accept these claims and they take this pill every day but do they really know what they are taking?

First of all, the name of the actual ingredient in Propecia that should get all the credit for fighting the battle at the front lines of the war on receding hairlines is called finasteride. Some chemists working for the drug company Pfizer invented it in a laboratory and it does some pretty amazing things. It is a 4-azasteroid compound that is a specific inhibitor of the Type II 5 alpha-reductase. In plain English, it basically prevents androgen testosterone from being converted into 5-dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. This preventative process stops your hair follicles from dying, which allows more hair to grow on your head.

The enemy, known as DHT is an enzyme that is found primarily in the prostate, seminal vesicles, epididymides, hair follicles and liver. These particular parts of the body account for approximately 67 percent of the DHT that circulates in the bodies of men. The war on baldness is going on at an intracellular level and finasteride is your army that is fighting gallantly for you against an evil enzyme.

Here are some particulars of the actual ingredient finasteride. It is a white crystalline powder with a melting point of 250 degrees Celsius. If you put finasteride in lower alcohol solvents it will freely dissolve, but it is almost insoluble when placed in water. Most Propecia pills available contain 5 mg of finasteride. They are film-coated tablets that also contain the inactive ingredients hydrous lactose, microcrystalline cellulose, pregelatinized starch, sodium starch glycolate, hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose LF, hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose, titanium dioxide, magnesium stearate, talc, docusate sodium, FD&C Blue 2 aluminum lake and yellow iron oxide. These inactive ingredients are mostly just the bonding and filling agents that it takes to make a little pill of Propecia that men can take every day.

There are some warnings when it comes to who can and cannot take Propecia. Women should not take it, nor should anyone who has liver problems. This is due to the fact that this drug works on the enzyme DHT which is primarily produced in the liver.

In most studies that have been performed on men between the ages of 18-54 who used Propecia on a daily basis for several months 65 percent showed an increase in hair growth over areas of the front and top of the scalp. Once the active ingredient finasteride interacts with the hair follicles in bald areas of the scalp, the follicles seem to come back to life. Hair begins to grow again, and so does your self esteem. So it would seem that Propecia is the best product available for men to use in the treatment of male pattern baldness, otherwise known as alopecia. The side effects are minimal and the process is as easy as taking a pill. The results have been very positive in the hair growth department.

In the war against a receding hairline it is good to know that a little white crystalline powder know as finasteride is fighting the battle for you at the intracellular level against a very destructive force known as 5-dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. In plain English, if you cannot afford a hair transplant and you want to know what the next best choice would be to have a better head of hair, Propecia seems to be the answer.

Does Propecia Really Work?

By Michael Connelly

When a person is losing their hair they will try almost anything to stop it from happening. They will put their faith in almost any product or procedure that comes down the pike, hoping against hope that this one is really going to work for them. In the battle against hair loss, Propecia is one product that seems to have risen to the top, at least in terms of publicity. When you read the vast amount of press that this product has received many people say that it has been responsible for hair growing back on their heads. However, an enormous amount of publicity does not necessarily mean that a hair loss product actually works.

Although thousands upon thousands of people afflicted with alopecia have put their trust in hundreds of different products and spent millions of dollars, most of this time, effort and money has been spent in vain. Sadly, very few of these people have ever had any hair grow back on their heads. Even sadder is the fact that there is no shortage of people and companies out there that will market so called miracle cures for baldness, preying upon people who are desperate to get their hair back.

If there is one product out there that people afflicted with balding conditions seem to be embracing it would have to be Propecia, or finasteride as the scientists who developed it in Merck laboratories call it. It is an FDA approved pill that men can take daily by mouth. In fact it is the first and only FDA approved pill approved for the treatment of baldness, and it has shown positive results for balding conditions on the vertex and anterior sections of the head, otherwise know as the top and middle front areas of the head. There is no solid evidence that it works for men with receding hairlines at the temples.

An independent panel performed a five year study on men aged 18 to 41 who took Propecia and the results were quite impressive. They studied photographic evidence and determined that most of the men who participated in the study began to see positive results 3 to 12 months after starting Propecia. These results ranged from a lot of hair growing back to a small amount of hair returning to their head. Subjects that did not see positive results after 12 months did not see positive results at all by the end of the study. However, this was an uncommon result as 9 out of 10 men involved in this study saw some degree of hair re-growth.

Although Propecia has received rave reviews, there are some downsides. One of the biggest ones is the fact that it can only be used by men. Although baldness strikes mostly adult males there are thousands of women and even children around the world who suffer from various hair loss conditions. They cannot take Propecia. Another downside is that some men experience certain sexual side effects. The most common of these side effects are a decrease in the desire to have sex, problems with erections and a decrease in semen amounts. These side affects occurred with less than 2% of the men studied and they disappeared once the men stopped taking the pills. This brings us to another downside, which is the fact that any positive results achieved with hair re-growth will be lost if you stop taking the pills. That means that if you want to keep the hair that grows back on your head you have to take the pills for the rest of your life. Most men would agree that it is a small price to pay to get their hair back.

Propecia is available by prescription only. If you decide that you want to start taking it you can visit your doctor and they will set you up. A lot of online pharmacies now offer U.S. licensed physicians that can give you an evaluation and write you a prescription over the phone or over the internet. Although there are some shady online pharmacy web sites there are many more that are reputable U.S. licensed pharmacies that sell FDA approved drugs. You just need to do a little research to find the good ones.

While there are many products and services out there that are claiming to be the latest cure for baldness it is important to keep in mind that most of them do not work. However, Propecia is not one of them. It is the only FDA approved pill for the treatment of hair loss. This is because an independent five year study has proven that 9 out 10 men show some re-growth of hair 3 to 12 months after starting Propecia. Some showed a little bit of success in re-growing their hair and some showed a lot of success. A very small percentage experienced sexual side effects. When you think about it, taking a pill every day is a small price to pay for getting hair to grow back on your head.

What is Propecia (Finasteride) and How Does It Help Treat Hair Loss?

By Mac Morris
Finasteride was originally developed to relieve symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), an enlargement of the prostate gland common in men over 50. While testing a 5 mg dose of the drug for those purposes in the early 1990s, unforeseen benefits for the retention and stimulation of hair growth on the head were observed. The 5 mg dose went on to be approved for prostate treatment by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and marketed by pharmaceuticals giant Merck as Proscar. Further trials led to a 1 mg dose for hair loss entering the market branded as Propecia, when on 22 December 1997 Finasteride was approved by the FDA as the first clinically proven systemic treatment for male pattern baldness. Finally men hoping to slow, stop or even reverse the process of balding had a successful pharmaceutical treatment at their disposal.

Available only with a doctor’s prescription, Finasteride counters hair loss by chemically preventing the metabolism of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) within the body. It achieves this by targeting and inhibiting type II 5-alpha-reductase, one of two types of an enzyme able to facilitate such a conversion. By interfering with this process Finasteride greatly reduces the amount of DHT present in, among other tissue in the body, the scalp. The detrimental effect that DHT has on the vitality of the individual follicles and hairs of susceptible individuals can thus be negated, or more accurately, deferred.

Clinical studies indicate that anywhere from 2 out of 3 to 80% of men orally administered a 1 mg dose of Finasteride on a daily basis report some improvement from the treatment. Results vary from successfully slowing down the balding process to stopping the loss of hair or stimulating new growth around the crown and top of the head. Less success has been reported around the temples however, and ceasing the treatment will cause the process of hair loss to gradually resume until within 12 months any benefits afforded by Finasteride have been lost. It is also unlikely to confer benefits on advanced cases of hair loss. Younger men who have hair they would like to retain and are willing to make a long term commitment are likely to benefit the most from this treatment.

On the downside, possible side effects reported by a small proportion of men using Finasteride during trials have included abdominal pain, back pain, decreased libido and volume of ejaculate, impotence, dizziness, rash, swelling of the lips and face, breast tenderness and testicular pain. Problems such as these cleared up after ceasing the treatment. For many participating men who remained on Finasteride, side effects reduced or resolved during the course of their treatment. Women who are or may become pregnant should not handle Finasteride (especially crushed tablets) due to a risk that the drug may cause birth defects in a male fetus. Men using Finasteride should inform their doctor prior to taking a PSA (prostate-specific antigen) test for prostate cancer as the drug may interfere with results. The use of Finasteride is banned in many sports as its presence in the blood can mask traces of steroid abuse.

In addition to its approved FDA status, Finasteride’s popularity can be attributed to the fact that it is one of the most convenient measures against hair loss on the market. Consumers will also be pleased that with the expiration of Merck’s patents on Proscar and Propecia in June 2006, a range of generic Finasteride alternatives has begun to bring prices for the treatment down considerably.
